About the Rock That Swing Festival

The Rock That Swing Festival brings together people from around the world who love to dance or listen to the music of the 20s to 50s. Participants from over 35 nations have attented the Rock That Swing Festival already. A large set of top bands, instructors, and performers create one of the best events, unmatched in its variety and classy atmosphere covering the great dances and the hot music from the 20s to 50s. You can admire people with cool demeanor, dressed in vintage clothes, petticoats or suits, with quiffs or ponytails, or be a part of it yourself. Feel nostalgically transported back to the times of Fred Astaire, Elvis or Marilyn Monroe. But most important: Rock That Swing is about having a good time.

Evenings

Various event locations - from the cozy studio to the two grand nights at the “Deutsches Theater” - will let you experience the feeling of the Swingin’ Forties and the Rockin’ Fifties. In the German Theater you will have the opportunity to dance on several dance floors with different music offerings. Even if you are not a dancer, you will have fun immersing yourself in this very special atmosphere and taking in the music of the live bands, the shows, tournaments and all the happy faces of the dancers. At the Deutsches Theater and the Künstlerhaus you can have a reserved seats. Each of the big evenings features different bands and DJs who are among the world's best in their genre and will have your fingers snapping and your bodies rocking.

The Rock That Swing Festival is offering a series of open contests in Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie, Balboa, Blues, Shag, and Charleston. Watch the best dancers compete for honor and great prizes.

The best international teachers and performers will perform incredible shows 1t the Deutsches Theater on Saturday and Sunday evening. The show program showcases dances like Lindy Hop, Charleston, Burlesque, Balboa Blues, and Boogie Woogie and - like every year - the anticipated teachers’ jam on Sunday will mark the climax of the show's program.

For the untiring ones the two After Hours Parties (Thursday and Friday night) will give you more time to party and dance at the Vintage Club until you drop.

Dance Camp

It doesn’t matter if you can dance or not. If you ever wanted to learn the Swing dances, the Rock That Swing Festival is the perfect place to start with specially designed classes for beginners up to teachers. Learn from the world’s best dance champions and find out about the new fads, styles, and moves.

There are also some introduction classes for beginners at the beginning of the Saturday and Sunday evening event.

Dress Code

In general we want to encourage you to accomplish the atmosphere of the dance nights with a stylish outfit; best would be 40s or 50s style of course. Training pants and T-shirts are meant for training or the beach and are not suitable for a delightful evening. If you don’t have special vintage clothing you can’t go wrong with a nice dress for the girls or a nice suit for the guys. You can also shop for chic clothing, dance shoes, accessories, the newest CDs, DVDs, and Rock That Swing souvenirs during the Festival at the Vintage Market.

How to Book

You can order tickets for all events of the Rock That Swing Festival and register for the Rock That Swing Dance Camp through the order system on this website.

You pick up your Dance Camp passes and info material at the Rock That Swing Check-In. The evening tickets will be mailed to you as electronic tickets.

How to Get There

Munich city is easily accessible by plane, train, or car and the city’s excellent infrastructure makes it convenient to go around by public transportation. All studios of the Rock That Swing Dance Camp and all evening locations are located within very short walking distance in the center of Munich. The website provides you detailed maps and travel directions.

Accommodation

Private accommodation options are very limited, but there is a large selection of hotels in a variety of price categories just around the corner. Since the venues are very close to each other, it is an advantage to stay overnight in one of the hotels. Further information can be found on the hotel page. The prices for a regular double room including breakfast in a nice hotel range between €75 and €130 per night.

Tight Budget

You can book single evenings and single days of the Dance Camp to tailor your booking to your budget and your time. Students and groups of 10 or more people receive additional discounts.

Very cheap accommodation can be found at hostels from about 20 € per night.
